Queen Victoria's legacy
What is meant by "Queen's Chain" and related terminology
2.5 million hectares of New Zealand's South Island high country are Crown lands subject to 300 pastoral leases. These provide long-term occupation and grazing rights but no right to obtain freehold ownership.
Through a voluntary process, approximately half these leases are currently being reviewed. Through exchange of rights between lessees and the Crown, approximately 35% is being reserved for conservation and recreation purposes, with public access provided over the freeholded balance.

A key case concerning implied dedication of a public road:
"From the moment that a dedicated way has been accepted by

Court of Appeal reaffirms roads held in trust for public benefit:
"Despite vesting in the local authority the right of passage
over a road is one possessed by the public, not the local authority".
